Sensei John De BonoJohn has been involved with Karate for 35 years; he is a 5th Dan in Shotokan. He started training in Wado Ryu at the Tonbridge Club in Kings Cross, in 1973 and after a while went to Marshall Street Baths turning his attention towards Shotokan.

Cesar
1st Dan (Black)

CesarCesar started his career in Karate, when he was 18 years old. He studied at his university in Medellin, Colombia, starting off with Sempai Edwin Correa (1st Kyu), and then afterwards with Sensei Raquel Orozco (2nd Dan). Soon he was able to represent his university, winning a bronze medal in his first competition. During his stay at the university he won various gold, silver and bronze medals in local, Regional and National Championships.

Jane De Bono

Jane, a late starter to the world of karate. After sitting on the sidelines for 13 years, watching her husband teach karate and occasionally attending competitions to support his students. She took the plunge and started training when some of the ladies from the club convinced her it was something worthwhile in trying. She did so and has never looked back.

Ferhat Seferoglu
1st Dan (Black)

Ferhat Seferoglu Ferhat is just seventeen and is in the sixth form at school in Enfield. Sports subjects feature highly on the agenda and he is studying both BTEC Business Studies and BTEC Sports. He is also currently taking part in the Enfield Leadership Academy, as part of the Step into Sport programme for young leaders aged 14-19, these are students who are committed to actively volunteering in their school and/or community settings.

He started karate lessons at the age of eight, but didn’t take an interest in competitions till much later on. Ferhat has won a few individual medals, but his most successful collection was when he was a member of the boys Kata team, winning three gold medals. He achieved his black belt in 2008 and hopes to try for his 2nd Dan late next year.

Ferhat is growing in confidence and is a keen assistant coach. He helps out with the beginners and the youngsters seem to relate to him very well. His hopes for the future are that he will go to college and eventually carve out a career for himself as a sports teacher.

 
Natasha De Bono
2nd Dan (Black)

Natasha had her first taste of karate at the age of five, she did a bit of training with her dad (John De Bono), in his dojo in Crouch End. This is were she did a demonstration for Labour MP Barbara Roche at an open day.

Christine McNeill
2nd Dan (Black)

Chris took up karate at the age of 27 having harboured an interest for many years. She joined the local Hyashi-ha Shitoryu karate club which fired her interest in karate. Here she trained for two years with Sensei Paul Saunders (6th dan), who also taught fighting with weapons. She particularly enjoyed the bo (staff) and was fortunate to attend a training course held by Shihan Mitsuya (8th dan) in that dicipline.

Clive Hughes
2nd Dan (Black)

I first took up Karate at the age of 12 with Sensei Malcolm Dorfman (8th Dan), JKA Dojo in South Africa and reached the level of 1st Kyu by 1987. Regrettably due to the social distractions that came with school leaving - I took a long break from Karate and having returned back home to England in 1991 it took many years before I found a JKA affiliated Dojo and resumed formal Karate training early in 2003, by October that same year I re-graded my 1st Kyu and by May 2004 was very proud to pass my JKA Black Belt, 1st Dan with M Tanaka Sensei.

Nick Fowler
2nd Dan (Black)

Nick began studying martial arts at the age of 12 as a student of Wado-Ryu Karate under Sensei Alwyn Anchors, 4th Dan. As a teenager his studies not only moulded his ability to defend himself but also taught him fundamental lessons in discipline, control and self-motivation. As part of a three man team Nick took gold at the Under-16 SKW England Karate Championships three years in a row before graduating to the adult ranks.
